What’s Involved
Most light fixture installations are quick, generally an hour or so per fitting once the electrician is on site, though this varies with the type of fixture and what’s already there to work with. We isolate the circuit, remove the old fitting, check the existing wiring and ceiling rose or junction box are in good condition, and fit the new light securely and safely. For heavier fittings such as chandeliers or multi-arm pendants, we’ll check the ceiling structure can support the weight, and fit an appropriate support bracket where the existing rose isn’t adequate.
Straightforward like-for-like fitting changes on an existing circuit aren’t notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations, so for most single-room jobs there’s no certificate required beyond our own record of the work. If the job involves adding a new lighting circuit, rather than just changing a fitting on an existing one, that becomes notifiable and we’ll handle the correct certification.

Changing a light bulb is obviously fine to do yourself. Changing the fitting itself means working on live circuits (even once isolated, knowing it’s genuinely isolated matters), correctly identifying and reconnecting switched live, neutral and earth conductors, and, for anything heavier than a basic pendant, making sure the fixing point in the ceiling is actually rated to hold it. Getting any of this wrong risks a loose fitting coming down, or worse, a wiring fault that isn’t obvious until it causes a problem later.
